Orphan students can play happily on the premises

For the orphan students of the hostel being run by the Social Welfare Department Sunday is the most awaited day of the week now. Not for it being a holiday, but the day means a happy outing for the students to the garden of the Collector’s camp office which was constructed during the British regime.

Entering the Collector’s camp office is not an easy task even for the government officials and the employees, unless they are invited.But, the orphan students can play happily on the premises, can do all funny things such as hanging from trees, picking fruits without permission.

Thanks to the initiative by Vizianagaram Collector M. Hari Jawaharlal, the children showcase their talent in music, dance and other extra-curricular activities.“The aim is to bring smiles on the faces of the children and instil confidence among them to face the challenges in the society in the absence of their parents,” says the Collector.

After the fun-filled activities in the garden in which Collector take part himself, the students sit in the conference hall where the higher officials usually go about the administrative affairs. They discuss and take part in interaction sessions and Mr. Hari Jawaharlal shares his ideas and tells stories on the the life history of great personalities like Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Abdul Kalam among others.

“The children should think big . They should feel that the government can play the role of their parents. That is why, I allow them to play and do whatever they want in the camp office. We are planning to reinvent the idea to achieve good results,” says Mr. Hari Jawharlal.Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Department Deputy Director Suneel Raj Kumar says the feedback on the move has been positive.
