Appointment of DGPs in the Telugu States has stirred a controversy because Chief Ministers preferred the cops of their choice for the top post rather than following UPPSP Rules or Supreme Court guidelines. The Apex Court made it clear state governments can't ignore the guidelines while appointing DGP.

SC Bench comprising of Chief Justice Deepak Mishra, Justice Kanvilkar and Justice DY Chadrandrachud told appointment of DGP has to happen only through UPPSP & State Government can't act independently in this matter. '3 Months before the end of current DGP, State Government has to send the list of eligible officers to UPPSP. 3 Officers will be picked up by UPPSP among them based on seniority and merit. From them, State Government can choose one officer as DGP. Top Cop appointed in such a manner can continue in the post for 2 years irrespective of his retirement age,' said Supreme Court.Apex Court asserted State Governments can't go against the judgement it offered in Prakash Singh's case. The decision of Supreme Court came as a shock to Chief Ministers of Telugu States. Would they still say...Our DGP, Our Wish!
