A team of doctors at Manipal Hospitals performed a liver transplantation on a seven-year-old girl on Tuesday.Hospital spokespersons said that Ramya suffered from a rare condition known as ‘Budd-Chiari Syndrome’ and was brought to the hospital with liver failure.

Earlier, she would have been referred to a hospital with specialists and equipment for liver transplantation either in Hyderabad or in Chennai. However, the hospital in the city which had the required equipment for liver transplantation, decided to go ahead when the child’s mother decided to donate a piece of her liver.

The hospital has performed several cadaver liver transplantations, but was yet to open its account in transplanting a liver from a live donor. Liver Transplant Surgeon Renu Kumar told the media that the ailment Ramya suffered from was seen more commonly in middle-aged (20-39) females but very rarely in children. Ramya also had a rare associated thrombotic (blood clot disorder) condition called Hyperhomocysteinemia. Two months after transplantation, both the mother and child are safe, hospital unit head Sudhakar Kantipudi said.
