The U.S. Consul General Katherine B. Hadda on Friday inquired about the prospects for exporting Kalamkari art products to the United States of America; apart from having first-hand information on the technical aspects of the textile art form that exists in Pedana in Krishna district.

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of her visit to Pedana, Ms. Katherine has said that she was curious to explore myriads hues of the textile art and trade.

“On the trade aspects, I do cherish to have learnt that the craftsmanship in the Kalamkari art got more authenticity and credibility in the foreign trade with the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Ms. Katherine lauded the efforts of Pitchuka Srinivas and his team of artists for following all the existing guidelines that were in force to promote the eco-friendly practices in the textile trade. “The history and heritage of the textile art and the way it is being preserved in Pedana have drawn us to have a glimpse of the art,” opined Ms. Katherine who visited ‘Kalamkari house museum’ developed by Mr. Srinivas and Mr. Varnun Kumar here.

On the support being extended from the Government of India for exports, Mr. Srinivas told Ms. Katherine that the support from Central government was quite disappointing, particularly in the areas of ‘Duty drawback’ offered to the exporters. In an interaction with the artisans, Ms. Katherine observed the exquisite craftsmanship involved in it and praised the creation of ‘Tree of Life’ done by Mr. Srinivas and his team.

Accompanied by Law Minister K. Ravindra, Ms. Katherine visited Machilipatnam to observe the preparation of Bandar Laddu, which got the GI tag in 2017.
