A special task force of the Fire Department from Chittoor, on Thursday rescued a spotted deer from a 70-foot deep agriculture well abutting the forest at Gudipala mandal headquarters, 10 km from here, on the Chittoor-Tamil Nadu border, after a three-hour operation.

Farmers crossing the path close to the well heard barking from the depths, and thought that it could be sound of pet animal. As the agonised calls continued, the farmers peeped into the well, to spot a spotted deer helplessly clinging on to the edges. The matter was immediately informed to the forest personnel, who, in turn, sought the assistance of the Fire department. The task force of fire wing rushed to the spot carrying with them rope-ladder and ropes.

After much difficulty, the rescue team scaled down the risky walls with a rope-ladder, and lifted the deer to safety. After being tied with ropes the animal was taken out after the prolonged operation.“Fortunately, the animal, except for some bruises, was hale and healthy. After a thorough observation, it was released back into the forest,” District Fire Officer A. Srinivasa Reddy said.

The Fire Officer said the department apart from the regular fire-fighting exercises was also trained in disaster management and rescue of wild animals.“We undertook several such operations in the district during the last three years. Keeping in view the water-related mishaps, the department procured specially designed rope ladders to negotiate the slippery terrain and precipitous slopes,” Mr. Reddy said.
