Gold smuggling busted in Nellore

Officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Nellore seized 58 pieces of smuggled gold of 999 purity weighing 57.04 grams worth Rs 1.82 Cr from a Toyota Car at the Toll Plaza on the national highway No 16 in Venkatachalam near Nellore following a tip off late on Thursday. They have also apprehended 3 persons travelling in the car. According to a press release from the Additional Director General of DRI, the officers have found 25 pieces of smuggled gold 999 purity weighing 24.07 gms in the car.  


They were concealed in a white coloured pouch with zip tied to the waist of a person and 33 pieces of smuggled gold of 999 purity weighing 32.97 grams was kept in an orange coloured cloth bag concealed in the dashboard of the car. 


Upon questioning the persons in the car admitted that the gold was smuggled into the country and they do not have any document to prove the licit purchase/import of the said gold. A total of 58 gold biscuits with foreign markings, weighing 57.04 grams and valued at Rs 1,82,40,128 was seized under Customs Act, 1962 and further investigation is in progress.
