1,507 persons driving in an inebriated condition

Going strictly against drunk driving in the city, the traffic police are now recommending cancellation of driving licences of repeat violators.

The police have so far caught 1,507 persons driving in an inebriated condition since January and 78 of them have been jailed, according to in-charge DCP (Traffic) T. Rama Prasad Rao.As many as 150 motorists caught during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday were produced before the media on Thursday. Mr. Rama Prasad told reporters that the violators including 104 motorcyclists were caught at 14 locations.

He said nine of them were heavily drunk recording more than 200 mg on the breath analyser test against the maximum limit of 30 mg.Mr. Rama Prasad said the police department had already sent recommendations to the Transport department for cancellation of licences of more than 500 persons for repeat violation of helmet rule.

“We are also recommending cancellation of licences of repeat drunk drivers,” he said.All the vehicles including 16 cars, 13 trucks and two travel buses were seized and the violators were produced before the court.

Violators with lesser alcohol content are being fined while those found with 100 mg or more are being sentenced to three-day jail. Those caught the third time will have to face suspension of driving licence. So far ?26 lakh worth fines have been imposed.
