Sushma Sahu, member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), visited the central prison located at Chemudugunta on city outskirts on Tuesday.

Ms. Sahu instructed the authorities to take steps for making a woman doctor’s services available to the 19 women lodged in the prison.

She said the general hospital was faraway from the prison and immediate medical care cannot be provided to the prisoners.

At present, a specialist doctor is treating the prisoners every Thursday and it would be proposed to set up a hospital to address the issue on a permanent basis, she added.

Ms. Sahu said skill development vocational courses would be offered to the women prisoners.

State Women’s Commission member Anuradha, ICDS Project Officer Prashanti, Town DSP Murali Krishna, Rural DSP Jayarami Reddy, Central Prison superintendent M. Ravi Kiran and others were present.
