Few days back 10 people have died and over 50 people are under medical treatment from an outbreak of gastroenteritis (GE) in Guntur town.Doctors advised the Guntur city health officials to check drinking water contamination in the two colonies.District Collector K. Sasidhar has reviewed the situation with medical and health officials and directed the department to keep medicines ready in all hospitals including the GGH.Drinking water contamination is said to be the reason for the epidemic.
On Friday, the GMC launched an operation to desilt the clogged drains in the areas of Old Guntur where GE cases were reported.Over 25 teams from various municipalities in the district began the exercise of declogging the open drains by using machines.The teams also shifted the tap connections near the drains and put them in homes.
District Collector Kona Sasidhar said the defunct Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Suddapalli Donka would be repaired.Water supply was being provided through tankers and super chlorination of water was also being done. A campaign would be run through messages and social media platforms advising people to drink only boiled water, he said.
The GMC has identified more than 35 manholes which have been clogged with solid waste.Ten deputy collectors have been told to supervise the operations.Cases come down
Meanwhile, the Collector said that the 19 mineral water plants which had been sealed would be inspected by the food control officers.Municipal Commissioner C. Anuradha said that the number of GE cases started coming down and, on Friday, 25 cases were reported at the government hospital here.
