The much-awaited works on the Kamadhenu National Breeding Centre at Chintaladevi in Nellore district here, are all set to begin soon with the district administration initiating preliminary infrastructure development plans for the project.
A sum of ?25 crore has been sanctioned for this project already which is the only such project in the entire South India.
District Collector R. Mutyala Raju inspected the area recently and instructed the irrigation officials to provide water for it from either Rallapadu reservoir or Marrigunta water body.
The Chintaladevi centre has a major advantage as it has got nearly 2,000 acres and hence wide scope for developing the necessary facilities such as semen stations and bull mother farms.
Mr. Raju has ordered digging of farm ponds on the outlying borders of the land and also for setting up biogas plants and solar power plants for the self-sustainability of the centre in future.
Once completed, the Chintaladevi breeding centre will act as a repository of germplasm of indigenous bovine breeds for the entire State.
The AP Livestock Development Agency (APLDA) is implementing the project with the main objective of addressing issues such as low productivity in indigenous breeds, lack of quality nutrition and facilities for breed improvement.
The breeding centre is expected to create other facilities that would serve the needs of farmers and breeders for artificial insemination, supply of semen doses, and so on.
